Conservation of Endangered Species in Hokkaido

Inspired by Hokkaido’s wild heart: This is where our story begins.

风溯雪原·故事始:五人故事的缘起

The wild heart of Hokkaido, a land of ancient forests, soaring eagles, and the powerful Hokkaido brown bear, stirred within us a profound sense of wonder and responsibility. It was the raw, untamed beauty of this northern island, alongside the urgent plight of its endangered creatures like the Blakiston's fish owl, that ignited our passion. The haunting call of the owl echoing through twilight, and the powerful presence of the brown bear guarding its territory – these moments etched themselves into our souls, becoming the very essence of our inspiration.

This is where our story begins. Inspired by the soul of Hokkaido, we embarked on a journey to understand, learn, and share. We discovered the critical threats facing endangered species here: habitat loss and climate change. To bridge the gap between awareness and action, we turned to Hokkaido's zoos and aquariums. These sanctuaries are not just places of wonder, but vital hubs for education and conservation.

Visiting these institutions, we witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by endangered species and the crucial work being done to protect them. We share these experiences and insights through detailed website content, engaging vlogs, visually compelling endangered species posters, interviews with international visitors, and personal reflections on our visitations. We believe that by providing a diverse range of information, we can inspire others to support these vital conservation efforts. Moreover, we believe that visual recognition of these species, through visits to zoos and aquariums, can greatly enhance awareness and preparedness for encounters in the wild, whether during trekking, hiking, or exploring Hokkaido's national parks.

By encouraging visits to these educational centers, we aim to not only increase awareness but also support the funding necessary for their ongoing conservation programs. This is more than just a mission; it's a testament to the power of inspiration, born from the very land we seek to protect, and a call to action to safeguard its unique wildlife for generations to come.

Meet the Team

We’re a group of five students from the University Malaysia Sabah, studying conservation biology, environmental science, and agriculture. Our mission is to explore conservation efforts for Hokkaido’s endangered species by visiting local zoos and aquariums.

Acknowledgement

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Masami Kaneko (金子 正美) Sensei, Ms. Khew, and the Hokkaido Shimbun Wildlife Foundation for their invaluable assistance during our visits to the zoos and aquariums. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the tourists who were willing to be interviewed by us at the zoos. Their support and cooperation were essential to the successful completion of our project. Thank you to everyone.
