Sarobetsu Wetlands, nestled on the northern fringes of Hokkaido near Wakkanai, form an integral part of the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, Japan's northernmost national park. These wetlands are renowned for their distinctive flora and offer excellent bird-watching opportunities. 

My journey to Sarobetsu Wetlands took place in the end of summer, during August. It proved to be a lengthy expedition, spanning approximately six hours from my starting point in Ebetsu. Along the way, the scenery was nothing short of spectacular, particularly when traversing Route 239. This coastal highway boasts breathtaking vistas, with the sea on one side and unique grasslands on the other. 

Upon reaching Sarobetsu Wetlands, I discovered that visitors are required to stay on designated wooden pathways due to the presence of treacherous sink mud. Wearing rubber boots is strongly recommended, as the terrain can get muddy and messy if one misstep. The wetlands are blanketed in lush grasses and mosses, which are exclusive to this area. Given its status as a sanctuary for birds, the use of drones is strictly prohibited. 

A visit to the Sarobetsu Wetlands center is an absolute must. Once a mining hub in the 19th century, it now hosts fascinating exhibitions featuring mining boats and equipment. These exhibits come complete with Japanese explanations on the peat mining process. Inside the center, a diverse range of displays covers everything from the formation of the wetlands to the local wildlife. My sojourn in the wetlands was a delightful experience, offering a chance to behold an array of unique flowers and plants exclusive to the region. I also had the pleasure of witnessing birds soaring through the sky and even spotted a rabbit. Given its relatively compact size, a day trip suffices for a fulfilling visit to this enchanting locale.
